Although he hated to, Anderson was the first to move away from her. He wanted to ask her why she hadn’t said anything after he and Daniel had opened their hearts to her. She’d admitted feeling the connection, but that was all. Was that enough for now?

He didn’t regret what had just happened, but that didn’t mean they no longer had to worry about her taking Deacon out. He caught Daniel’s attention and got a quick nod of acknowledgment. Still, he waited until they’d finished dressing to bring the subject up again.

“Shannon, you have to stop trying to hurt Deacon.” He could see her stiffen, knew her reaction wouldn’t be good. “Besides, now that he knows you’re still trying, you won’t get within a mile of him. If you do, it’s because he let you, and trust me, Deacon won’t be the one needing protection then.”

“I don’t care how many people, including you two, he puts between himself and me. I have to do this.”

A tear formed in the corner of her eye, and he ached to wipe it away. She’d gotten under his skin not only sexually but emotionally as well. He could sense the heartache she fought so hard to keep at bay.

“Deacon Slater is very old, which means he’s very powerful. He doesn’t need anyone’s protection, but he has ours. Our pack, uh, our town owes him that much.” Daniel shrugged at Anderson for his slipup.

Anderson took her hand, and although at first she tried to tug it away, she let him keep hold of it. “Tell us why it’s so damn important for you to kill him. You’re not a professional vampire killer. I know it’s more than wanting to rid the earth of them.”

She nodded, her lower lip trembling with the effort to hold back her tears. “It’s personal.”

Daniel ran his hand down her back as she pushed open the rear doors of the van then took a seat on the end. They joined her, each trying to comfort her with a caress here, a touch there.

“Tell us, Shannon. If nothing else, it’ll do you good to get it out.” Anderson caught the first tear to run down her cheek. He wrapped his arm around her and held her close.

The connection, the invisible bond between a werewolf and his mate, was a good thing, first bringing her to him then speeding the time it took to get to know each other. But the other side of the bond, the side that he didn’t relish, was the tie that came to any misery or pain she might suffer. He checked Daniel and could see that he, too, felt the loss she held in her heart.

“Go on, baby. We’re here for you. Now, tomorrow, forever.”

She lifted her head to stare at him as though she couldn’t believe what he’d said. Then, all at once, the tears coursed down her cheeks as sobs racked her body. Anderson held her as Daniel moved closer to take her hand.
